  16. This   guide  covers  installation  and  startup  of  OWL   Basic
  17. Bookkeeping  - Version 3.x.  The complete User's Guide  is  built
  18. into  the program and is accessed by selecting the "USER'S GUIDE"
  19. option.   In order to get the most benefit from this program,  we
  20. strongly suggest that you read the user's guide.

  23. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  24.  
  25. OWL  Basic Bookkeeping requires an IBM Compatible PC, DOS 2.1  or
  26. above, a hard disk and 512k of available RAM memory.
  27.

  29. DOS CONFIGURATION
  30.  
  31. For  proper operation of all functions, the program requires that
  32. the number of DOS file handles be set to 21 or more.  This number
  33. is  established when you boot your computer and is  derived  from
  34. settings in file "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory of your start-
  35. up  disk  drive.   For  proper  operation,  you  MUST  have  file
  36. "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory of your start-up disk  and  it
  37. MUST   contain   the  line  "FILES=21"  (values  above   21   are
  38. acceptable).  Assuming your start-up disk is the C drive, you can
  39. create this file by typing the following:
  40.  
  41.   COPY CON: C:\CONFIG.SYS
  42.   FILES=21
  43.   Ctrl-Z   (Press "Ctrl" and "Z" keys together)
  44.  
  45. If  file CONFIG.SYS already exists, use a text editor to view and
  46. modify  the  file as needed.  Once you have added or  edited  the
  47. "CONFIG.SYS" file, YOU MUST RE-BOOT your computer for the changes
  48. to   take   effect.   Consult  your  DOS  manual  for  additional
  49. information.

  52. UPGRADING FROM VERSION 1.0 through VERSION 2.1.
  53.  
  54. Before  installing  this version of Basic Bookkeeping,  you  MUST
  55. make a complete backup of your existing data.  To make a complete
  56. backup  of your existing data, run your existing version (Version
  57. 1.x through 2.x) of Basic Bookkeeping and:
  58.  
  59. 1. Select  the  DEARCHIVE option and dearchive all data you  have
  60.    previously archived.
  61. 2. Select the BACKUP option and create a disk containing a backup
  62.    of all data.
  63. 3. If you  are  running multiple copies of basic  bookkeeping  in
  64.    separate  directories, repeat steps 1 and 2 for each directory.
  65.    Be sure to use a different floppy disk for each backup.
  66. 4. Install   this  version  of  Basic  Bookkeeping.   For  further
  67.    instructions,  see  the  User's Guide section titled "Upgrading 
  68.    Data Files."

  71. INSTALLATION
  72.  
  73. To  install, upgrade or reinstall OWL Basic Bookkeeping, type the 
  74. following commands:
  75.  
  76.   A:            if you are not installing from drive A: substitute 
  77.                 the appropriate drive letter for "A".
  78.   CD \pathname  where "pathname" is the directory where the distri-
  79.                 bution files are located.  If  you are  installing
  80.                 from a floppy drive this will probably be the root
  81.                 directory i.e.("CD \"). If you downloaded the files
  82.                 this might be something like "CD \comm\downloads"
  83.   INSTALLB d    where "d" is the hard disk drive where you want  to
  84.                 install  the  program  ("INSTALLB  C"  installs the
  85.                 program on the C drive).

  87. Basic Bookkeeping will be installed in subdirectory "\OWL" of the
  88. designated hard disk drive.

  91. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  92.  
  93. To  run  the  OWL  Basic Bookkeeping program type  the  following
  94. commands:
  95.  
  96.   C:
  97.   CD \OWL
  98.   BBK
  99.  
  100. If  you  installed  the program on a hard  drive  other  than  C,
  101. substitute  the appropriate drive letter for "C:"  in  the  first
  102. line  above.   If  you have difficulty running  the  program  see
  103. "Troubleshooting" below.
  104.  
  105. The data files shipped with the program contain sample data which
  106. is  provided to help you become familiar with the various options
  107. and capabilities of the program.  The sample data covers calendar
  108. year 1994.

  111. TROUBLESHOOTING
  112.  
  113. The  following is a brief list of errors that may be  encountered
  114. and what to do about them.
  115.  
  116. Out  of Memory or Low Memory:  You don't have enough memory below
  117. 640K  to run the program.  If your computer has at least 512K  of
  118. RAM,  you  should be able to eliminate this problem  by  removing
  119. memory  resident  programs  (TSR'S)  and  device  drivers  (mouse
  120. drivers, network drivers, etc.) to free up conventional memory.
  121.  
  122. Program  Aborts  with Message (DOS error 04):   This  means  that
  123. insufficient DOS file handles have been specified.  If  you  have
  124. already  added  the  line FILES=21 to your  CONFIG.SYS  file  AND
  125. rebooted  your computer, try increasing the number  a  few  at  a
  126. time.  Reboot your computer each time you increase the number.

  128. Program  Locks up or screen becomes distorted:  The mouse display
  129. software  in BBK can cause problems with some displays  (so  far,
  130. the  problem has been reported only for some EGA displays).  This
  131. can  occur  even  if  you don't have a mouse  installed.   Adding
  132. switches  to the command line that cause BBK to use a non-graphic
  133. mouse  cursor  usually corrects the problem.  Try  running  BASIC
  134. BOOKKEEPING with the following command:
  135.  
  136.   BBK /nv /ng
  137.  
  138. Mouse doesn't work:  Your mouse driver is probably quite old  and
  139. out of date.  Contact your mouse vendor for an updated driver.  A
  140. mouse is not required to run Basic Bookkeeping.
  141.  
  142. Other Errors:  If at any time you are unable to resolve a problem
  143. with  this  program,  call or write us a  letter  explaining  the
  144. nature of the problem.  Please also include a description of your
  145. computer  configuration  including any  TSR  programs  which  are
